专家简介:

Dr. Zhang is a Senior Research Scientist with Climate Research Division of Environment and Climate Change Canada. His main research focus is to understand causes of past climate changes and to project future climate. He served as a lead author for the IPCC Special Report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation and a lead author for the IPCC 5th Assessment Working Group I report. He is currently a co-chair for the WMO CCl/WCRP/JCOMM joint Expert Team on Climate Change and Indices and a co-chair for the World Climate Research Program Grand Challenge on Understanding and Predicting Weather and Climate Extremes.

 报告摘要:

Weather and climate extreme events are on the media, talked about by people, and causing damages each single day. For example, a key word “Louisiana flood 2016” to the Google search produced 19,200,000 results in less than half a second. Public perception is that frequency and intensity of extremes is increasing. The climate research community has often been asked if extreme events are more frequent and more intense than in the past and if human activity is the driving forcing. In addition, when devastating event such as the Wuhan 2016 flood occurs, the public asks if that devastating event is caused by human influence on the climate. This presentation provides a brief overview on the current understanding of changes in extremes. It includes review of research on long-term changes in extremes and whether human influence is a factor, and a brief introduction to “event attribution” that attempts to address questions related to the occurrence of individual weather and climate extremes.
